DISTANCE LEARNING & ALTERNATIVE METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Teachers & families collaborating to help students.
Sunshine School teachers and families have been working together on distance learning opportunities so that families are not alone in meeting the educational needs of their children.
Our Arkansas Better Chance (ABC) staff has been hard at work continuing to support families by providing Alternative Method of Instruction (AMI) packets to our students. They are doing fun activities via Zoom and providing opportunities for parents to expand on the activities that have been provided in these packets.
Our preschool teachers and Early Childhood Developmental Specialists have been working remotely with families to put together activities and special education plans. Each of the students we serve have unique needs and we are doing our best to assist families as they adjust to doing education and therapy at home during this challenging time.
For some students, like Newton, it means continuing to work on improving his speech-language skills by incorporating play with some of his favorite Legos and transformers. One of their family’s biggest challenges is juggling Newton’s needs while also doing distance learning work with their other son, Parker, who has 3-4 hours of school work everyday. Balancing each of the boy’s needs while managing all that energy cooped up in the house is difficult.
Newton’s mom, Kristal, shared: “The instruction from Sunshine School has been helpful in giving us a platform to start from. Now we can incorporate learning in playing board games, card games, sorting Legos by colors and counting them while building things, and when we go outside we talk about our surroundings, which helps with Newton’s speech goals.”
We are thankful to be able to collaborate with parents to find solutions to the challenges they face in homeschooling, but we miss our students terribly and can't wait to return to school when it’s safe!
